Ontario releases Health Supply Chain Strategy Report

An Ontario Ministry of Health appointed expert panel released their recommendations for healthcare supply chain strategies, yesterday in a report titled Advancing Healthcare in Ontario: Optimizing the Healthcare Supply Chain – A New Model. Among the recommendations was the implementation of global standards in Ontario.

In October, the World Health Innovation Network released its White Paper, Visibility: The New Value Proposition for Health Systems which highlights how clinical supply chain processes transform the care delivery environment to ensure adverse events are much less likely to occur. The paper recommends three key elements to support high-performing, high-visibility clinical environments, including the adoption of GS1 barcoding standards. The report highlights the importance of implementing supply chain processes in healthcare to reduce medical error and improve patient safety. Medical error is now the third leading cause of death in Canada – right behind heart disease and cancer.
